Manchester United Women are on the verge of promotion to the Women’s Super League after thumping Aston Villa 5-0 on Wednesday.

Casey Stoney’s side are seven points clear at the top of the Women’s Championship with three games to go, and cannot be caught by Charlton or Durham.

Millie Turner, Alex Greenwood and Jess Sigsworth made it 3-0 against Villa at half-time, with Ella Toone adding a fourth after the break, and Charlie Devlin rounding off the scoring with a close-range finish. Villa goalkeeper Sian Rogers was also sent off.

United’s promotion remains subject to meeting FAWSL Licence criteria. Requirements include a minimum of 16 contracted hours per week for playing staff, a minimum financial investment from the club, an established youth academy and a full-time strength and conditioning coaching set-up.

Sky Sports News understands both the FA and Manchester United are confident the club will pass the WSL’s requirements when the decision is made next month.
