Find it harder to fall asleep on Sunday nights?



So the weekend is almost over and it is Sunday night again. You have changed your clothes, made your bed and put the lights off. Everything is set up for you to sleep soundly, but for some reason, you can’t fall asleep and continue to toss and turn in the bed for hours.
Does this happen to you every Sunday? If yes, then you are not alone.

As per a survey conducted by online panel provider Toluna Omnibus, one in every four persons has trouble falling asleep on Sunday nights. Another study reveals that 60 percent of workers have their worst night’s sleep on a Sunday and as many as 80 percent of people reported sleeping best on Friday nights.

Sleep specialist Michael J. Breus, Ph.D., refers to this Sunday night insomnia as a “social jet lag”. If you also find it difficult to get good night sleep on Sunday nights, then blame your weekend schedule for it. Experts believe that your weekend schedule, which is quite different from your usual Monday through Friday routine causes Sunday night insomnia.

Reasons
There are numerous reasons why you have difficulty sleeping on a Sunday night, the most crucial one is stress.
Every one is struggling with stress these days but being excessively stressed can have numerous negative effects on your body. If you are taking excessive stress about the week ahead and are trying to micro-manage your entire week schedule, then it might cause trouble in your sleeping.

The second reason could be the amount of physical or mental activity you perform. Generally, on weekends there are less physical and mental activities as compared to other weekdays. As we do not work on Sunday, our body is not tired and when it is time to fall asleep, it stays awake.

Sleeping in on weekends also contribute to your Sunday night insomnia. You put your entire biological clock out of whack by sleeping till afternoon on weekends. It is similar to a jet lag you experience when you travel across time zones.

Even excessive intake of alcohol and caffeine can wreck your sleep cycle.

How to get rid of Sunday night blue?

Wake up your regular time even on Sundays.

Get active in the morning.

Avoid big and heavy meals which contain lots of calories.

If it is stress that is keeping you awake late at night, try listening to music or read a book.

Write down what is worrying you. This will help you to clear your head.
