Experts recommend your child to get bored during summer break

With the onset of summer break, most parents start planning activities that kids will do so they don’t sit idle, right? Tennis classes, summer camps, drama course and what not! While this is true for most parents today, child psychologists are of the opinion that kids should be allowed to get bored during their summer break.
While you are busy planning and scheduling your child’s day minute-by-minute during the summer, doing so may be preventing them from discovering their true interests. According to child psychologists, the primary role of a parent is to enable their children to make their place in the society. They should be allowed to find ways to occupy themselves and find leisure activities that helps them feel happy. By planning every minute of their day, parents are blocking their development and not letting them learn to do this on their own.

This brings forth the connection between boredom and imagination. As adults, when we feel bored, we engage in activities that help us unwind. It could be reading a book, cooking or just taking a stroll. But by planning everything for your child, you don’t let their internal stimuli develop, which is crucial in unleashing their true creative side.

While most of you will argue that with the Internet taking over our lives, there is hardly any space for boredom. But experts insist that boredom is an important growth stimuli and the capacity to get bored is also a development achievement today. It allows them to sit back and reflect instead of just rushing through it.

So the best way to go about it would be to sit down with your child and decide things they would want to do and enjoy in their summer break. Allow them to express freely. And every time they come to you complaining that they are feeling bored, ask them to consult the list you created together.

Next time your child comes to you complaining ‘I am bored’ tell them it is not a terrible thing to be bored, in fact it is a stepping stone to being independent and self reliant!
