02/9​From abs obsessions to core training

Until the 2000s, everyone we knew obsessed over six pack abs or flat abs, but this decade saw them advance to a more holistic fitness approach. And this is the period we discovered the ‘core’. The term called core training gained traction and people realised the importance of having a strong core for not only working out but also for better day-to-day functioning. Instead of doing hundreds of crunches, we moved on to planks, knee tucks, mountain climbers and more dynamic exercises that engage the core.

03/9​Fitness apps and bands

From using a wrist watch to keep track of time, we graduated to wrist watches that told us our heart rate, tracks your stats, calorie expenditure and number of steps covered, gave constant workout reminders and even monitored our sleep quality (because this is the decade where we realised sleep played a pivotal role in overall wellness).

04/9​Amateur marathon runners and cyclists

Sports, running, cycling used to be a specialised technique until this decade. But 2010s saw the rise of the amateur runner/cyclist. These were people who just took up running, learned on the go (literally) and went on to run marathons. Official data shows a paramount increase in the number of marathon runners in the past decade. Shorter run training is becoming more common, marathons are easier to find (and participate) and there are runners’ club everywhere that encourages people to take up this routine.

Sugar was the sole evil in 2000s but in 2010s, low-carb diets gained momentum. Before this decade, people focused more on carbs and missed out on the goodness of protein. Before this decade (and even in the start), women steered clear of the gym area that stacked all weights. It was meant for men alone. But this decade realised the potential of weight lifting for women, both for their body and weight loss. Strength training only improves your body and does not bulk you up. However, it is important to train under supervision to avoid mishaps and to know how to get the most out of this workout.

Working out took a whole new meaning in this decade with high intensity workouts. It was the decade’s most popular workout with lots of people focusing on short, strenuous workouts, popularly known as High Intensity Interval Training (HIIT). Multiple studies were carried out assessing the impact of high intensity workouts for overall health and fitness. You must have seen 7-minute, 5-minute and 3-minute calorie crushing workout that promised to provide the same results as an hour long low intensity workout.

Gyms were all about treadmills, arms and legs machines and the weight room till the 2000s. This decade saw the entrance of interesting workout gear and gadgets like bosu ball, kettlebell, slam ball, which reformed basic workout. Kettlebell squats, overhead lunges with slam ball, bosu ball sit-ups, are just some of the examples of how these exercise gears enhanced the overall fitness game. TRX suspension training was another new exciting addition to gyms, spicing up workouts.
