Hip-hop star DIVINE, who recently topped the Apple Music charts with his second album Punya Paap, talks about his sources of inspiration and his favourite film.
Q. Punya Paap is a hit. Did you experience Difficult Second Album Syndrome while making it?
I was not worried at all, actually. The lockdown gave me a lot of time. I was not on tour. I was not [going] outside. I was just in the studio at home and writing music. Last year, I wrote a lot. I already have half an EP ready. It was much easier than writing [my debut album] Kohinoor. I’m having fun with my music. I’m not trying too hard. I’m letting it come very naturally.
Q. What made you sample Goli Maar Bheje Mein for the track Satya?
[The Hindi film] Satya was my favourite movie growing up. I always had that song in my head. We used to sing it a lot. Every party had that song. I was with (music producer) Karan Kanchan in the studio and had the first verse ready and wanted a hook. We did two or three hooks-when I sang this one, it sounded like it fit the beat.
Q. Where do you get your skill with wordplay?
A lot of the wordplay or whatever I write comes from my experiences, whatever I’ve felt or seen around me. I read about current affairs and what’s happening with music around the world. I’m a very good observer.
Q. After collaborating with your idol Nas, you’ve now worked with international hip-hop heavyweights Pusha T. and Vince Staples (on Jungle Mantra for the Netflix adaptation of The White Tiger). Who’s next on your wish list?
Damian Marley is top most [on my list]. I love his music.
