BACKSTAGE PASS: THERESA ANDERSSON

Theresa Andersson has a knack for performance—be it just barefoot in her kitchen (as was the case with her viral music video for “Na Na Na”) or costumed atop a flapping bird float as part of New Orleans’ Mardi Gras parade (for her most recent video, “Hold On To Me”). The Sweden-born, Louisiana-based singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist will be reminding us all of that very fact with her cross-country tour in support of her second full-length album, Street Parade, which came out last week. With a scheduled appearance at the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival, followed by stops that take her from coast to coast, Andersson gave ELLE.com a hint of what’s to come with this family-inspired, vintage-influenced ensemble.

Outfit breakdown: I found the dress in my aunt’s closet in Sweden and modified it a bit, the shoes are from Target, the gold bangles I found during a Sunday browse through the French Market in New Orleans, and I found the belt at resale shop Funky Monkey in New Orleans. The gold necklace is one I’ve had since I was a toddler—for some reason I started wearing it again when pregnant and I rarely take it off. It’s a gold heart that has my teeth marks in it from when I was one!

I brought this outfit on tour because:
I like wearing something that makes me feel more connected to my family when I travel. A lot of times that may be something I don’t necessarily wear on stage, but in this case, my aunt’s dress has the perfect style for my one-woman stage show. I like wearing a skirt for movement and the fabric is super easy to care for. I also have to wear a belt to clip my in-ear monitor receiver to, and this dress goes well with a belt.

My personal style is:
stylish yet comfortable, with the option to dress up or down.

If this outfit were one of my songs, it would be:
“Street Parade,” a haunting, dark water blue. Trinkets, gold, glitter rain…. yep, I think that would be the song.

I always pack: several silver necklaces from Mars Violet, a LiaMolly sweater, and the wool wrist warmers my mom makes for me.

You’d never catch me onstage wearing: shoes while performing the solo show. I need my feet free to operate the looping pedals!

My pre-tour shopping stop is:
the shops on Magazine Street, New Orleans. Especially Trashy Diva. If I am in Sweden I go to Adelsgatan in Visby, which is similar in a Nordic kind of way.

The best on-the-road purchase I ever made was: my high-waist super skinny red jeans found in Vero Moda [in] Visby, Sweden.
