Sunny Deol’s 1971 War Multiverse: Beating Pakistan thrice, with a turban on every time – The Headlines

After a remarkable comeback with Gadar 2 in 2023, Sunny Deol continued his good form with his next release in the form of Jaat in 2025. The actor is now all set to make another action appearance in Border 2. The film is the sequel to the iconic Border, where he played the lead. Joining him in the sequel are Varun Dhawan, Diljit Dosanjh, Ahan Shetty, Sonam Bajwa, Mona Singh among others.

Interestingly, with Border 2, Sunny Deol has completed a rarest of the rare trilogy. It is the third time in his career that he fought against Pakistan onscreen in the year 1971. Plus, on all three occasions, he played a man belonging to the Sikh religion. The three films are as follows:

Border (1997)

The JP Dutta classic saw Sunny play the real-life character of Major Kuldip Singh Chandpuri, who was a Sikh. He was the commander of the Alpha Company, who led India to victory in the 1971 India-Pakistan war. The film told the story of the Battle of Longewala from that particular battle.

Gadar 2 (2023)

The film was the sequel to Anil Sharma’s all-time blockbuster Gadar: Ek Prem Katha (2001). The story of the first film commenced in 1947. It saw Sunny play sardar Tara Singh. The sequel was based in 1971 when Tara, like the first part, defeats Pakistani forces again in their own backyard and returns home.

Border 2 (2025)

The sequel to Border will also be focussing on the 1971 Indo-Pak war. This time, Sunny will be playing Lieutenant Colonel Fateh Singh Kaler, a real-life Sikh character who served the Indian Army. The movie will be focussing on the collaborative efforts between the Indian army, navy and air-force in defeating Pakistan during that war.

It can even be said that this some sort of a Sunny Deol multiverse where he defeats Pakistan three times in the same year and that too while wearing a turban on all three occasions.

But it might feel odd if someone watches Border and Border 2 in one go. There are chances that that person can feel that Major Kuldip Singh Chandpuri and Lieutenant Colonel Fateh Singh Kaler were lookalikes. Two exact lookalikes fighting the same war from the same side?
