Q. Your last film was in 2015. Where have you been all this while?
I’ve been on a blissful island thinking I’m a newlywed even after four and a half years of marriage. But last year, during his Diwali party, Mr Bachchan asked me, “Why are you not working?” He looked at my husband who said it’s her call. I began modelling at age 15, acting at 19. The last few years, I’ve been able to spend time with my parents and sisters which I never got to do earlier.
Q. You make your streaming debut with Dangerous on MX Player, which also features your husband. What made you end your blissful holiday?
Post marriage, I made a conscious decision that we won’t work together as I didn’t want to carry the burden of being a couple in a workspace. After he signed it, I liked the script too. Also, I’m a big fan of investigative thrillers and female detectives on shows like The Fall, Broadchurch and Killing Eve. This role was somewhat in that direction.
Q. You complete 20 years in cinema next year. How has the journey been so far?
I am happy and proud of myself. From day one to now I have never compromised on who I am for acting and what makes me feel good in acting. Yes, I have done some crappy films, but I had a different kind of fun doing those. Nobody can always get it right. There is no set pattern in showbusiness.
Q. As an outsider who got her shot at fame, what do you make of the debate on nepotism?
Each individual is responsible for his or her journey. There are a number of outsiders who have made it big in this industry… there are also many star kids who were launched and have now gone. We can’t be victims because we are outsiders and star kids can’t be apologetic because one can’t decide where one is born. The final decision is always with the audience.
