While tea is considered a healthy beverage, coffee is seen in a mixed manner. Nutritionist Kavita Devgan reveals that it is not a devil as it is made out to be.
First and foremost, coffee is low in calories. One cup of black coffee consists of only 2 calories.
Coming to the kind of coffee that is the healthiest, Kavita shared that people who enjoy big frothy cups of coffee filled with high fat milk, whipped cream, flavoured syrups, sugar and what not are definitely not having the healthy variation. This is literally a dessert and not coffee. So it is very important how you have it.
You will be surprised to know that caffeine, which is an important part of coffee, is used in a lot of pain-relieving medicines. “Just the way you don’t want to pop in too many pills, the same way, I would suggest that you do not drink too many cups of coffee,” shares Kavita.
Not many are aware that coffee is rich in antioxidants. It has caffeine, chlorogenic acid, and other components that can help lower blood sugar levels and diabetes. Furthermore it is considered to be good for memory.
It can also help prevent the risk of Parkinsons and Alzheimers. It is also great for cutting inflammation in the liver. According to research, two cups of coffee can reverse fatty liver. But the point I am making here is two cups.
Coffee makes you feel good and lifts spirits, that’s because coffee releases dopamine and adenosine in the brain, which are both neurochemicals. But then, you need to understand the twist here. If you are a coffee-an-hour person, you need to be careful. “What happens is, there’s a temporary lift, you feel good about yourself and then suddenly, there’s a crash. You try to cover that with another cup and the same process repeats. So, do not do that. The takeaway is, in moderation, coffee is brilliant for you,” she concludes.
