The awards season has officially begun in Bollywood. It was only recently that Ranbir Kapoor and girlfriend Alia Bhatt walked away with best actor and actress trophy at Filmfare Awards 2019. While Neetu Kapoor and Soni Razdan haven’t been able to stop gushing about Alia’s win, Deepika Padukone’s fans are quite disappointed with the verdict. This year, Alia Bhatt was pitted against Deepika Padukone in the nominations, but the 33-year-old actress lost out to the Raazi actress.
2018 saw Deepika Padukone essay the role of Rani Padmini in Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Padmaavat. The film got a thumbs up from critics and fans alike, and many lauded Deepika for pulling off the character so well. So, when Deepika lost out to Alia at this year’s Filmfare Awards, one of her fan clubs blasted the organisers for choosing Alia Bhatt over Deepika Padukone. Moreover, they questioned the jury for letting Ranveer Singh and Ayushmann Khurrana share the Best Actor award, but not do the same for the Best Actress Award.
Deepika reacted to the post and wrote, “To all my Fans, I am sorry I let you all down and promise to work harder than ever before..#upwards&onwards.”
Earlier today, Deepika shared the first look of her upcoming film Chhapaak. The actress essays the role of an acid attack survivor, Malti. The film is inspired from the story of acid attack survivor Laxmi Agarwal.
In an interview at the Facebook office, Deepika revealed that she was not “emotionally ready” to take on such an intense film, after the challenging and emotionally draining Padmaavat.
“Last year, when I was looking at scripts, I wasn’t emotionally ready to do this sort of a film. I was really looking at doing a love story,” she said, adding that she knew within five minutes of the narration that Chhapaak was the film for her.
“Meghna [Gulzar, the director] walked into the office and took me through the story. In five minutes of speaking with her, I knew in my heart that this is what I wanted to do next. Something about Meghna herself, Laxmi’s story and Meghna’s conviction in this film… It was very similar to Piku. In just five minutes of meeting the director, I knew that this is the film I wanted to do,” the actress said.
Deepika might have missed the Filmfare Best Actress trophy this year, but she sure has an impressive line-up of films in the coming days.
