The study had 16 adults who used 10 common indoor exercise machines to compare how many calories each tool burned as compared to others.

The study was a small scale one but provides insight into which machine is worth your investment. The machines involved in the study were treadmill, stepmill, rower, recumbent stepper, recumbent bike, arm ergometer, exercise fan bike, elliptical, upright bike and arc trainer.

Participants were made to exercise for 30 minutes each on all the 10 cardio machines. They found that standing, weight-bearing exercises burned more calories than a seated one. The top four machines that burned calories were treadmill, stepmill or stairmaster, elliptical and stationary bike.

If you have a limited time for your sweat session, choose the cardio options that allow you to stay closer to the standing position and keep more of your weight on your feet.
