02/6The turning point

I was diagnosed with Crohn’s Disease and put on steroid supplements, which increased my hunger pangs, lethargy and eventually, I weighed 73 kilos.

My turning point came when I realized that I have gained so much weight and looked so fluffy that I felt embarrassed to look at myself in the mirror. I lost all desire to dress up, look beautiful or wear nice dresses. All I could think was nothing would fit me. In fact, I was so embarrassed, I wasn’t keen on getting photographed much.

There was so much negativity around and one day I decided to quit making excuses and do something about the situation at hand, or else, be depressed and never be able to smile.

03/6Diet followed for weight loss

My breakfast: One slice of whole wheat bread with jaggery-vala-chai.

My lunch: Moong dal chilla with any subzi prepared at home and a bowl of yogurt. Sometimes, I would have brown rice or besan chilla.

My dinner: A bowl of subzi with yoghurt, or lightly sauteed vegetables with oats/ dalia khichdi.

Pre-workout meal: Black coffee

Post-workout meal: Fruits (2-3)

I indulge in (What you eat on your cheat days): Parathas, Naan, homemade sweets, but in moderation.

Low-calorie recipes I swear by: Moong dal chilla, Paneer, Makhana.

04/6Workout and fitness secrets

I followed a lot of workout gurus on Youtube and started my fitness journey. On a regular basis, I would do 20 minutes of bodyweight workout at home (without any equipment) and later, started adding 15000 steps daily. To be honest, walking or finishing up the step-count wasn’t easy, because of the COVID pandemic, but I had to think outside the box and started walking inside my house- I stopped laying down on the couch, walked frequently, never sat for long and again, got up for a stroll post my meals. This way, I managed to keep the step count up.

Fitness secrets I unveiled:

Creating a calorie deficit, and identifying nutrition values of anything you eat is the most important aspect of weight loss. Plus, I observed a change when I overhauled my diet (consumed less sugar, replaced chapatis and parathas with lentil rotis), walked for 15000 steps every day and indulged in light workouts.

05/6How do you stay motivated?

After I saw the drop of the first kilos, I felt motivated to keep working and never looked back.

How do you ensure you don’t lose focus?

Rather than giving into my hunger pangs, I eat more mindfully. I value a food’s nutrition count and content rather than just the taste. This way, I am more conscious of what goes into my mouth and this keeps me super focussed. Even my cheat day meals are moderated and not heavy. I have made it a goal to stay healthy for life, and plan to continue to do so, while enjoying my life.

My message is, one need to not cut out on your indulgences- just moderate, and eat 1/4th portion to satisfy the craving.

What’s the most difficult part of being overweight? Being overweight is an emotionally draining and depressive phase for a person. There’s a point when you feel you cannot lose weight, no matter how hard you try. That feels demotivating.

Since I am also a mother, I had to work around to manage my schedule, workouts with my 4-year-old’s.

What shape do you see yourself 10 years down the line? Perfectly slim, fit and trimmed.

What are the lifestyle changes you made?

-Eating healthy food

-Replacing sugar with jaggery

-Working out for 6 days a week at home

-Being more conscious of my diet and lifestyle.

What was the lowest point for you? It has to be the point when I realized none of my old clothes fit me, and slowly, I lost out on all confidence. I stopped going out even for a walk thinking that I look ugly and fat. I used to overthink that my husband would leave me because of my appearance.

There was also a point when I saw no difference in weight, even after exercising. I still continued, and in a matter of weeks, saw a drastic drop.

06/6Lessons learnt from weight loss

Weight loss and this lockdown journey has been a revelation for me. I have learnt so many lessons, and I plan to use them for long.

For all those planning to lose weight and looking for motivation, I should make these points:

-It is never too late to be healthy, or make a start

-Always eat healthy homemade food.

-Focus on nutrition and not just the taste of a food item.

-Even simple exercises like walking bring a lot of energy, agility and strength and it’s good to be physically active. I’ll continue to do so.
