India vs England: Virat Kohli defends MS Dhoni, Kedar Jadhav after bizarre go-slow approach

India lost their first match of the 2019 Cricket World Cup on Sunday. After winning 5 out of their first 6 matches (one of which was a washout), India failed to chase down 338 agaisnt England on a flat pitch at Edgbaston on Sunday.

By the end of the game, it was clear England would be run-away winners. And India were booed. But the Indian players were not booed because of a rare World Cup defeat. They were booed because the crowd was frustrated with yet another go-slow approach by MS Dhoni and Kedar Jadhav.

Chasing a massive total, India got off to a sluggish start but Rohit Sharma (102) and Virat Kohli (66) at least upped the ante to give India hope. Rishabh Pant (32) and Hardik Pandya (45) brightened India’s prospects but strangely MS Dhoni and Kedar Jadhav left experts baffled with their knocks on a pitch which had very little in it for the bowlers.

Instead of going for the sixes, Dhoni and Jadhav blocked and ran a single here and there to leave a Sunday crowd frustrated in Birmingham.

MS Dhoni and Jadhav faced 31 balls and played out 7 dots, They ran 20 singles and hit only 1 six and 3 fours when the need of the hour was a lot more boundaries.

While Sourav Ganguly and Nasser Hussain raised some serious questions on air during their commentary stint, India skipper Virat Kohli defended his batsmen at the end of the game.

“We kept losing wickets and that doesn’t help in a big chase, but credit goes to England in the end. It’s up to discussions with the two guys who were in there,” Kohli said at the post-match presentation ceremony.

“I think MS Dhoni was trying really hard to get the boundary but it wasn’t coming off. They bowled in good areas and the ball was stopping, hence it was difficult to bat towards the end. We have to sit and assess and improve on things in the next game,” Kohli said.
