Q. After over 25 years in films, you have finally done your first period project with Tanhaji. But if there’s one historical character you would like to play, who would it be?
I’d have loved to play Cleopatra. I thought she was amazing. Elizabeth Taylor was fabulous [in the 1963 film]. The more you read about the characters, the more you feel you wouldn’t be able to do justice to them because they are so layered and detailed.
Q. Are you then someone who believes that a film can never live up to the book it is adapted from?
If you read a book and then watch the movie based on it, you will always be slightly disappointed. I have read the Game of Thrones books and I haven’t seen the series. I can’t believe they tried to make The Fountainhead also. Don’t even try it, don’t go there.
Q. Renuka Shahane, who has directed you in your next film, recently said you have been underutilised.
We had a great time working on Tribhanga which just wrapped up. Yes, I have done very few films. I am lazy. But there’s no sense of time passing by or of missed opportunities.
Q. What are the perks of working with your husband who is also the producer of both films?
I told him that you are asking me to do Tanhaji because you don’t want to pay me and just get an actor in for free. He insisted that I was the only person who can play this. I heard the script. He knows with me there are no free lunches, hello!
