There are a variety of reasons why most people don’t like going to the gym – topmost being you don’t know what to do in the gym (lest you want to spend a bomb every month on hiring a personal trainer). This is where technology steps in. Online workouts are increasingly gaining popularity, with people both in the gym and at home are working out under the guidance of online trainers.
Online workouts promise to be effective in weight loss and allows you to pause when you feel out of energy or simply rush through a certain exercise you don’t like doing. Some people try their best to copy the online trainer with their understanding of the move. Sometimes they may even do it without realising the real techniques involved in it, which the followers may not be aware of. So we come to the burning question – Is it as safe as real training?
Many people fail to understand the intensity of these exercises and end up hurting themselves. 24-year-old Sheetal Misra lost 8 kilos in two months but her lower back gradually started to ache. She was happy with the weight loss progress and thought it was part and parcel of the whole process. Eventually she realised she had injured her back and went through multiple rounds of physiotherapy.
According to Dr Garima Anandani, Senior Spine Specialist and Clinical Director, QI Spine Clinic, “One size fits all seems to be the mantra with the buzz of online workout sessions. However, every individual requires a customized plan based on his physical evaluation, fitness testing and medical parameters. Based on the above parameters an individualized program will work to suit the need and avoid any injury.”
Dr Kiran Sangani, Medical Director, Melt.Health, a metabolic ugrade centre added, “Exercising under supervision will always help in doing correct form, using correct technique, doing optimal intensity and quantity and following correct breathing techniques during different exercise forms thereby helping prevent injury and reducing risk of abnormal physiological responses to exercise. This gets all the more important for people suffering from any disorders/diseases like heart disease, hypertension, diabetes, or any other metabolic disorder where parameters can fluctuate on a daily basis.
However, there are now online training mediums that provide supervision through web chats and daily follow ups on progress.
Conclusion
Online workout sessions may look highly appealing to you but remember, they need to be followed with caution. If you feel any discomfort, it is best to consult an expert.
