Politics of protest

On December 30, Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched a hashtag on Twitter conflating the whole country with his government and those who support the CAA. If India supports the CAA, are those protesting tens of thousands out on the streets not Indian?

This bhagwa (saffron) is not yours… It is a symbol of the Hindu religion… In that religion there is no place for anger, violence and revenge

Having capsized the country’s news agenda by accusing the UP police of manhandling her, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra reminded reporters that the more serious issue was the Yogi Adityanath government’s extreme aggression towards protesters. Without irony, UP deputy CM Dinesh Sharma warned her not to start a clash of religions for your politics

No one will be stripped of their citizenship… I challenge Rahul baba’ to show even one clause in the Act that has provision to take away citizenship.

Home minister Amit Shah, speaking in Himachal Pradesh, reiterated the government defence of the CAA. But protesters are making a different point. Perhaps the protesters too are asserting their pride in their country, in its founding ideals?

In my opinion, CAA is too little compassion coming too late…

Before an audience of followers, Sadhguru Jaggi Vasudev made a long defence of the CAA and NRC, and mocked protesters, nearly 30 of whom have died. The PM shared the video on Twitter. Who needs government spokespeople when a spiritual leader can do the job with such facility?

Everyone has right of access to medical care… The visuals of a policeman violently opening an ICU door… is a clear indication of the new truth’ and the new standards’

The Indian Medical Association protested on behalf of its members after police in Mangalore were filmed rampaging through a hospital. There were reports from other parts of the country of police not letting doctors treat injured protesters

Badla…

Uttar Pradesh chief minister Yogi Adityanath used the word to describe the action his government would take against protesters for destruction to public property. Notices were duly sent out and shops shuttered. Now, will every protester indiscriminately beaten or detained by state police receive monetary compensation, or even an apology?
