Pranab Mukherjee passes; succumbs to septic shock

Former President and seasoned politician, Pranab Mukherjee, who was admitted to a hospital in New Delhi early this month passed away today.(August 31) after suffering from a septic shock due to a lung infection.
The news was confirmed by Mr. Mukherjee’s son on Twitter.

Septic shock is a life-threatening health emergency which causes blood pressure levels to severely drop and can also lead to organ failure and tissue death (gangrene). The condition requires acute and critical medical care. According to experts, the septic shock also has a high mortality rate (about 50 per cent).

A septic shock occurs when infection-fighting chemicals are released into the blood flow and trigger inflammation and turn potentially fatal. The symptoms of a septic shock can range from high fever, low blood pressure readings, numbness in the body, pale arms, disorientation and difficulty breathing. It also spreads quickly, so getting emergency health care helps.

Sepsis can be triggered by any health complication, but for elderlies, the risk is considerably higher. Pre-existing conditions, along with frail immunity can make it dangerous.

The 84-year-old was hospitalized for a brain clot surgery on August 10. While the former president was diagnosed as COVID+ prior to the surgery, he underwent an operation to treat the brain clot immediately.

On Tuesday ( August 11), doctors from the Army Research and Referral Hospital, Delhi Cantonment issued a statement saying that Mukherjee’s health remained critical and had shown no improvements so far. Doctors said that while his vital parameters were stable, he remained to be in a comatose state, having been put on a ventilator.

Mukherjee, who served as the country’s president between 2012-2017 had to be rushed to the hospital in an emergency. It has been reported that he suffered from a massive fall in the bathroom, following which he developed neurological complications and hence, had to undergo life-saving surgery.

The Bharat Ratna awardee also put out a tweet alerting people about his COVID diagnosis before being taken for the surgery:

“On a visit to the hospital for a separate procedure, I have tested positive for COVID-19 today. I request the people who came in contact with me in the last week, to please self-isolate and get tested for COVID-19,”

The President’s son, Abhijit Mukherjee also put out a statement on social media, saying that his ‘fighter’ father was still in a critical state but was slowly responding to medical interventions, thanking well-wishers for their prayers. His daughter, Sharmishtha Mukerjee also issued a similar statement.

He is survived by his three children, Abhijit, Sharmishtha and Indrajeet after his wife’s death in the year 2015.
