Jonny Bairstow, David Warner break Gambhir-Lynn record for highest opening stand in IPL

Jonny Bairstow and David Warner broke the record for the highest opening partnership in the Indian Premier League when they went past 184 against Royal Challengers Bangalore in Hyderabad on Sunday. The record was held by Gautam Gambhir and Chris Lynn when they added an unbroken 184-run stand against Gujarat Lions.

On April 7, 2017 Gambhir and Lynn chased down a target of 184 in Rajkot against Gujarat Lions without. While Lynn remained unbeaten on 93 off 41 balls, Gambhir was 76 not out off 48 balls. That was Gambhir’s last season with KKR before he moved to Delhi Daredevils.

On Sunday, Bairstow and Warner were in dangerous mood.

Jonny Bairstow became only the third Englishman after Kevin Pietersen and Ben Stokes to score a hundred in the IPL. Warner, meanwhile, went past 50 for the third successive match in the 2019 season to reclaim the Orange Cap from Andre Russell. This was also Warner’s 8th successive fifty against Royal Challengers Bangalore.

“It was great to bat here – between the wickets it’s one of the bigger pitches in India so getting the gaps and constantly rotating the strike is tough – fantastic pitch out there. I’m not sure I’m superhuman, I’m absolutely cooked (laughs), but as long as you’re getting your head through the ball it’s alright – only if you fall over, you’ll miscue it. It was fantastic to bat in the middle with Warner – and it’s fantastic he’s got the Orange cap,” Bairstow said at the mid-innings break.

Warner also agreed with his opneing partner, saying, “I think the 12 months have done me well – I think I am refreshed. A fantastic partnership – a fantastic innings by Jonny (Bairstow). Half the job is done.”

David Warner and Jonny Bairstow also became the first opening pair in IPL history to be involved in three successive 100-run partnerships.

Against KKR, Warner and Bairstow had added 110 before adding 110 against Rajasthan Royals.
