Manchester City returned to the top of the table as Fulham recorded their first away win of the season in Saturday’s Premier League action.
Manchester City moved back above Liverpool again after Phil Foden’s first Premier League goal proved enough for a 1-0 home win over Tottenham.
The encounter was much more tense than Wednesday’s Champions League classic at the Etihad Stadium, with Foden’s back-post header after five minutes proving enough for a hard-earned victory.
Raheem Sterling – one of six nominees for the Professional Footballers’ Association Players’ Player of the Year award announced on Saturday – saw a second-half effort brilliantly stopped by the boot of Spurs’ stand-in goalkeeper Paulo Gazzaniga.
At the other end, Ederson made two notable saves to deny Heung-Min Son, whose goals in midweek had helped put Spurs through to the Champions League semi-finals despite a dramatic 4-3 defeat on the night.
City moved a point ahead of Liverpool, who play at Cardiff on Sunday, but were left concerned when playmaker Kevin De Bruyne limped off with what looked like possible hamstring problem during the first half.
“It’s an important win in the race for the Premier League,” said City boss Pep Guardiola. “It was tight, Spurs had more chances than the previous two games, but the effort the players had after a tough day on Wednesday was incredible.”
Brighton later battled to a goalless draw at Wolves, which edged them three points clear of 18th-placed Cardiff and meant they avoided a fifth straight league defeat.
Chris Hughton’s side had lost 2-0 at home against the Welsh side on Tuesday night to leave them very much in the relegation fight.
Wolves almost broke the deadlock at the end of the first half when Diogo Jota’s effort clipped the top of the crossbar.
Relegated Fulham finally secured a first away Premier League win after a 1-0 victory at Bournemouth.
The Cottagers, who beat Everton at home last weekend, claimed the points thanks to a 53rd-minute penalty by Aleksandar Mitrovic after he had been fouled by Jack Simpson.
Gerard Deulofeu scored twice as FA Cup finalists Watford won 2-1 at bottom club Huddersfield.
The former Barcelona frontman fired the Hornets into the lead after just four minutes.
Deulofeu was on target again in the 80th minute when he knocked in a rebound after Jonas Lossl had saved from Ken Sema.
The relegated Terriers scored a late consolation through Karlan Grant but it was not enough to prevent a seventh successive defeat.
Harvey Barnes’ first goal for Leicester in stoppage time helped snatch a 2-2 draw at West Ham.
Michail Antonio’s header from Mark Noble’s cross broke the deadlock in the 37th minute.
The Foxes equalised in the 66th minute through a neat finish from in-form striker Jamie Vardy as he flicked in a cross from England defender Ben Chilwell.
The Hammers looked to have wrapped up all three points when substitute Lucas Perez scored with nine minutes left, knocking the ball in after Pedro Obiang’s effort came back off the post.
Perez soon saw another goal ruled out for offside, which replays appeared to show was the wrong decision.
Substitute Barnes then drilled in a cross from Youri Tielemans to grab a draw for the visitors.
In Saturday’s late kick-off, Ayoze Perez scored a hat-trick as Newcastle all but secured their Premier League status with a 3-1 win over Southampton at St James’ Park.
Perez broke the deadlock in the 27th minute when he slotted the ball in off the far post, and the Spaniard doubled the lead just three minutes later when he converted Salomon Rondon’s cross.
The Saints, still not yet clear of the relegation fight, improved after the break and set up a tense finale when substitute Mario Lemina swept the ball in from 20 yards.
Perez, though, made sure of the outcome when he deflected in a header from Matt Ritchie to complete his treble with four minutes left.
